GnuCash Review: Real double-entry books, free forever, no company attached

GnuCash is volunteer-built, open-source, double-entry accounting that costs nothing, ever. There is no company to raise prices on you. The trade is honest: you do the work a paid platform automates, starting with typing in bank transactions.

How GnuCash will be evaluated

Full scorecard, testing notes & sources

What it really costs (25%): The whole bill, not the sticker: the plan you actually need, payroll, card fees, and seats. Plus the vendor's record on raising prices — a cheap plan from a vendor that hikes every year is not cheap.

Does the bookkeeping hold up? (25%): The boring heart of the product: bank feeds that stay connected, clean reconciliation, and reports an accountant trusts at tax time. A pretty dashboard scores nothing here.

Can your books move in — and out? (20%): How much of your history arrives when you join, and how much leaves with you if you go. Import tools, export formats, and what happens to your data after you cancel.

Invoicing and getting paid (15%): Estimates, invoices, time tracking, and payment collection for businesses that bill clients. We check the caps too — an invoice limit on a cheap plan is a price increase in disguise.

Support and straight pricing (15%): Two questions. Can you reach a human when the bank feed breaks? And does the price mean what it says — honest free tiers, promos that are labeled, no surprise gates on features you rely on.
